THE QOSMIO X870: TOSHIBA’S NEXT GAMING-CAPABLE LAPTOP

While we are still talking about Toshiba, the company has apparently revealed the new family member of itsQosmio desktop replacement series - the Qosmio X870. The new laptop is said to feature unspecified Sandy Bridge-based processors from Intel and “next-gen” NVIDIA graphics processor (could it be a Kepler-based GPU?) with 3GB worth of graphics memory.

Other than that, it is also equipped with 17.3-inch Full HD display with 3D display capability that is provided through NVIDIA 3D Vision technology together with 5ms response time. In terms of hard drive, consumers can choose either up to 2TB of disk space in a standard hard drive or go for a hybrid disk drive – presumably just like the one that is offered on the new Satellite U840 Ultrabook.

Other features include a red backlit keyboard, Harmon Kardon speakers, HDMI ports, four USB 3.0 ports, Bluetooth 4.0, Gigabit LAN ports and the option of either a Blu-Ray ROM or the usual SuperMulti DVD drives. No pricing or release information are available for the time being but expect them to appeared on the market sometime in the second quarter of this year, if Toshiba choose to release the laptop here.

Entirely new fabrication and assembly processes had to be developed to produce the ZENBOOK™, calling for new machining tools.

In the below image, chief ZENBOOK™ designer Loewy shows us that the design team was trying to get the same thin and light profile of a super-high quality watch when developing the ZENBOOK™.

They were also going for a seamless and smooth look, with an embedded keyboard and an oversized, integrated touchpad that would be roomy despite the overall compact form factor of the machine. Keeping the proportions just right was critical.

Angular harmony was another highlight of the design process. The ZENBOOK™ had to have a sharp culminating point on one end, and a rounded, smooth curve on the other. They even paid close attention to the underside, which for the first time ever on a notebook gets the same aluminum hairline treatment as the rest of the machine.
